I was unable to find copyright information at the time of this posting. But the art of Leon Golub struck that revolutionary chord in me the first time I saw it as a 3″ wide reproduction in an Art History book. This was not the proper preparation for the first time I saw one of his paintings in person.

I used this canvas as a dropcloth in my studio for the duration of 2010. It is a full 91.5″ tall x 55″ wide. A big’n as they might say around these parts. And as you might’ve guessed, I have another I’ve been using in 2011. I will be spending the next week varnishing the @#%* out of this piece to make the dog hair, wine spills, X-acto cuts, paint dribbles and incidentals SHINE.

I received lots of great notes about visiting a different part of Durham, meeting new people, learning something new and being around others without pretense. That’s exactly what we’d hoped to hear, so we are here to call the opening a success. Many thanks to the folks who supported the project, including Jennifer Ashdown with prettyfab PR, Only Burger, Farmhand Foods, Preservation North Carolina, Uplift East Durham, The Durham Art Guild and Scientific Properties. We also enjoyed helping out Book Harvest NC and the NC School of Science and Math’s food drive.

So where do we go from here? We’ve performed a little emergency surgery on a few of the pieces and believe we’re stabilized to weather a 4-6 week installation. At the end of April the paintings will go up in gallery space at The Durham Art Guild. We’ll have an opening there and maybe an additional event or two including an auction to benefit Preservation R.E.D. before the project culminates in late Summer 2011.

While the paintings are installed on Driver Street, we wanted to make them readily available to all via this 1-page pdf fit with artist statement, driving directions, neighborhood map and contact information. Links are active in this pdf, FYI.

So I started a One-Year Painting last October. Not last October, but last-last October. The painting and the concept behind it were tied to my residency at Golden Belt in Durham, NC, courtesy of the Durham Art Guild. For those who don’t know, the residency was extended. It’s just that now I have to pay rent! ; )

Back to the painting. It was to be a year-long endeavor, but I wanted to prolong the magic, if you will.

I’m including some images below to show how things progressed. The piece was donated to the Guild to auction in their annual fundraiser.

So, as I was saying, back to the painting. The surface of the painting served as my tabletop during my residency at GB. It was merely a sheet of plywood braced by 2×4′s to be a portable tabletop on sawhorses. The painting is 8′ wide x 4′ tall. I cut… without cutting boards… on purpose. I spilled paint. I spilled wine. And so did others. I sanded. I pasted. You get the picture. And I gradually steered the tabletop into a finished painting. The subject matter became intertwined with the journal that was the painting.

I don’t want to say too much about it — it’s autobiographical. And metaphorical. And a couple of other words I won’t repeat. Anyhow, check out the progress below — you can click any image to enlarge.
