But the art of Leon Golub struck that revolutionary chord in me the first time I saw it as a 3″ wide reproduction in an Art History book. This was not the proper preparation for the first time I saw one of his paintings in person.

I’ll have a set of images centered around water available this 3rd Friday in my studio at Golden Belt. The prints range in size from 18″ x 24″ to 14″ x 36″ and there are single prints as well as a nice diptych up for grabs.

Durham Art Walk is a twice annual art event showcasing the work of over 200 artists at sites all over vibrant downtown Durham.

 

The Durham Art Walk Spring Market brings thousands of art lovers for a weekend full of art and exploration of all that Durham has to offer including: dazzling examples of local artistic talent, world-class restaurants, great shopping, innovative new businesses and fascinating historic sites. Art Walk celebrates the creative energy of our local artists, arts organizations and downtown entrepreneurs by placing local artists and performers in downtown spaces and businesses in a unique showcase weekend. Unlike conventional studio tours, the Durham Art Walk features visual and performing artists in both traditional and unexpected sites throughout downtown Durham. Visitors can purchase fine art and crafts in every medium, hear live musical performances, enjoy great food and see roving performance art. Sites are within easy walking distance around downtown but there is also free shuttle service provided and visitors can take the new Bull City Connector (www.bullcityconnector.org). The event is free and open to the public. Rain or shine.

I received lots of great notes about visiting a different part of Durham, meeting new people, learning something new and being around others without pretense. That’s exactly what we’d hoped to hear, so we are here to call the opening a success. Many thanks to the folks who supported the project, including Jennifer Ashdown with prettyfab PR, Only Burger, Farmhand Foods, Preservation North Carolina, Uplift East Durham, The Durham Art Guild and Scientific Properties. We also enjoyed helping out Book Harvest NC and the NC School of Science and Math’s food drive.

So where do we go from here? We’ve performed a little emergency surgery on a few of the pieces and believe we’re stabilized to weather a 4-6 week installation. At the end of April the paintings will go up in gallery space at The Durham Art Guild. We’ll have an opening there and maybe an additional event or two including an auction to benefit Preservation R.E.D. before the project culminates in late Summer 2011.

While the paintings are installed on Driver Street, we wanted to make them readily available to all via this 1-page pdf fit with artist statement, driving directions, neighborhood map and contact information. Links are active in this pdf, FYI.
